Road Construction causes delays at Cancun International Airport in 2022

New road construction is causing delays for travelers on their way from the Cancun Airport. Officials are asking travel experts to warn their incoming guests of these delays to help reduce travel frustration.

According to the Mexican Association of Travel Agencies (AMAV), they are asking each travel agency to inform their collaborators of the new road construction strategies for their tourists.

The infrastructure upgrades are expected to take more than a year to complete and will reduce the massive traffic delays already happening in that busy area once construction is completed.

Tourism Transportation Arrivals and Departures Delayed

Thousands of tourists who travel through the Cancun International Airport daily will experience delays due to the road construction.

Most of the road construction will be focused on Blvd. Luis Donaldo Colosio (Colosio Boulevard) which is the main road that gives access to the Cancun International Airport and connects tourists north into the downtown area of Cancun.

Tim’s Ocean Condos is located directly east of the Cancun International Airport. And our vacation rentals are only affected by this road construction when first leaving the airport until the “clover” intersection.

The clover intersection is where Blvd. Luis Donaldo Colosio goes under Punta Nizuc. Punta Nizuc takes you east to Blvd Kulkukan. Blvd Kulkukan is the man road of the Hotel Zone and where you will find Tim’s Ocean Condos The Penthouses of Oleo Playa Cancun.

To avoid major traffic problems, the Cancun city council has diagrammed an operation to define alternative routes such as Avenida 135 and Huayacan. These roads do not connect to Tim’s Ocean Condos. So, you will need to use the main entrance of the Cancun International Airport to commute to our vacation rentals.

We are asking our guests from Tim’s Ocean Condos to increase their departure time from the penthouses to the Cancun International Airport by one hour. If you were expecting to leave three hours prior to your flight departure, please plan on four hours to avoid any setbacks.

Airport Transfer Delays

Local airport transfer companies say that the road construction will also affect transfers from the airport to the hotel zone. Furthermore, travelers should brace themselves for these delays, especially during employee rush hours.

Hotel Zone Employees Commute Delayed

As the Cancun tourist industry continues to grow, a larger number of employees are commuting daily to the hotel zone.

Most employees use the bus system during the peak transport hours of the day. This leads to massive traffic on the main roads and avenues.

With more people concentrated on one main road in the hotel zone, traffic is frustrating at times.

The new bridge is expected to reduce the traffic delays on Blvd Kulkukan during the major employment rush hours. The current construction plan includes a total of three lanes for motor vehicles and one other for pedestrians and cyclists.

Cancun’s New Bridge

The renovation affecting Colosio Boulevard are only part of the renovation upgrades in the area.

A new 8-kilometer-long bridge will be built between the center of Cancun resort district and the city center. That project is expected to cause delays in transportations over the summer of 2022.

This new bridge will help ease congestion and improve the access between the Hotel Zone and Downtown Cancun area that is separated by the Nichupte Lagoon.

The bridge will connect Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard with Blvd Kukulkan.

The road construction on the new bridge is estimated to take over 500 days. It is expected to be complete in August of 2023.

Authorities have announced that the road construction for the bridge will begin as soon as possible. Hopefully during July of 2022.

Originally Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced the bridge construction in his Infrastructure Works Program for Strengthening Cancun and Tulum in February 2022.

The government is financing the Nichupte Vehicular Bridge, to provide alternative access to Cancun’s Hotel Zone over the Nichupte Lagoon. The bridge includes three 23.5-meter lanes in each direction plus a third reversible lane and two access junctions, costing over 4.87 billion pesos or $236 million US dollar investment.

This bridge is vital for emergency purposes, residents of Cancun and visitors of the hotel zone will need this bridge to help evacuate the area when natural catastrophes hit such as tropical storms and hurricanes.

Social Media to be used for road construction updates

The Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals of Cancun (AMPI) proposed to create a social media forum. Hoping to communicate the various road construction developments in Cancun.

To mitigate the mobility during the fifteen months that the construction is expected to take place.

This forum is especially focused on communicating the vehicular bridge over the Nichupte lagoon. Also the resurfacing project of the Colosio Boulevard. And the reconstruction of the new vehicular clover to the Cancun International Airport.

The communication forum will be held August 24 through 26, 2022 at the Cancun Center.

With the directors of Fonatur (the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism), the directors of the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development; and the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communication and Transport and ASUR, in order to present the plan and all alternatives for vehicular circulation that will be needed while the road construction is in process.
