Will my cell phone work in Cancun?
Technology has come a long way in a short amount of time. Many people are already on a plan with their cellular service company that includes unlimited calls and texts to Mexico and Canada. If you are not on one of these plans, please visit your provider before you travel to Mexico. You can usually sign up for a temporary plan right on their website. If not, call your cellular phone provider to get on a temporary plan while you are in Cancun. It will save you a lot of money and give you better cellular and Wi-Fi service. Almost all these temporary plans will now self-terminate when you get back home, without the need to call and cancel it.
Verizon is the provider that we use, and it is very reliable in Mexico. You will not get more than 3G, and most of the time if you are inside a building like Home Depot or Walmart you will not have service, you will have to step outside to see your texts or receive a phone call.
The app called WhatsApp is extremely reliable, secure and simple while in Cancun. It works when our internet and cellular doesn't. I recommend downloading this app before leaving the United States.
While in Mexico calling back to the United States on a cell phone you need to dial the + before the 1 and then the area code and number.
If you are dialing a Mexico phone number, you must dial +52 then 1 then the area code and number.
