What is a Mexico Tourist Card

All foreign citizens traveling to Mexico must fill out Tourist Card prior to their arrival. This is an Entry Immigration Form that details information about you and your visit to Mexico. Each person regardless of age and how long you are staying in Mexico will need this card. This information that you provide will be kept by the Mexican Immigration Authority as an official record of your visit to Cancun.

This form is usually given to you while you are on your flight. However, to ease the immigration entry process now you can fill out the Immigration Forms online.

The online registration process is convenient, all you need is your passport, flight information, address, or name of the hotel where you are staying and a printer to print your Official Entry Tourist Card.

You will need:

There are two parts to the immigration form, the Entry Form, and the Exit Form. They email you both forms already completed with the proper information. When you arrive in Mexico you will go immediately to the immigration booth where the immigration officer will keep the entry part of your form and then they will stamp the exit part of the form which you will keep with you safely with your passport while in Mexico. When you check in for your flight home you will present the exist portion of the form along with your passport.

If you lose your card or it is stolen, you will need to pay a fee to get a replacement tourist card at an immigration office, or you may be fined when you are leaving Mexico.

According to the Mexican National Institute of immigration you should file a police report to document the loss of theft of your tourist card. Then you will need to go to the nearest INM office with your passport and the police report and all your other travel documents.  You will then be asked to fill in a new form and then you will have to make a payment for the replacement of your card.

You may decide to wait until you are leaving the country and pay a fine at the airport for failure to present a tourist card which is around $40.

However, getting a replacement for your card at the airport can be a huge hassle. Take a picture of your tourist card and keep it with you just in-case.
