The Hotel Rating System used in Mexico uses Stars and Diamonds

If you are trying to plan a trip to Mexico you may see reviews on various resorts and their accommodations. While researching resorts you will encounter a star or diamond rating system that is confusing and very misleading because the star rating system has no universal scoring system used across all travel websites such as AirBnB or Trip Advisor and HomeAway. This means that you cannot rely on the rating of vacation rental properties located in Mexico and compare them to the United States rental properties.

Here is a general idea of the star rating system:

  • 1 star - often means that the property has no frills and only offers basic accommodation. This does not mean that it is unkept or dirty it simply means that it is a place to sleep and that is pretty much it.
  • 2 star - similar to a one star, only more comfortable
  • 3 star - have some sort of unique amenities and provide a higher quality of service than the one and two star resorts
  • 4 star - are noted for being more upscale and a higher quality of service with extraordinary comfort
  • 5 star - provides the highest quality of service, considered flawless, state of the art facility. No details are overlooked and your services are completely personalized. This resort provides nothing but the most luxurious toiletries for their guests and is of the most extreme comfort level.

A Five Diamond Resort is the very best rating you can receive from American Automobile Association (AAA) and the Ritz Carlton Cancun received 16 consecutive AAA Five Diamond Awards making it the first hotel to receive this honor.

In 2019 Forbes Travel Guide named the Ritz-Carlton Cancun a Five Star Hotel. The Forbes Star Rating are luxury travel ratings that have been the gold standard in the hospitality industry since 1958, click here for more information on how Forbes compiles its ratings.
