Our Cancun Beach: Restoration and Recovery After the Hurricanes
Last Updated on April 15, 2025 by MeganOur Cancun beach was impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Beryl.
They brought bringing strong winds, high waves, and erosion to the shoreline. Some areas lost up to 10 meters of shoreline. Despite the damage, restoration efforts are already underway, and soon our beach will return to its natural beauty, ensuring a wonderful experience for all visitors.

Cancun Shoreline Recovery: A History of Resilience
Cancun has faced similar challenges in the past. After Hurricane Wilma in 2005, beaches were severely eroded, leaving hotels exposed to waves. But by 2009, a major beach restoration project replenished millions of cubic yards of sand. That project restored a wide, inviting stretch of Our Cancun Beach, which remained a favorite destination for many years.
How We Restore the Coastline
Beach restoration, or beach nourishment, involves adding new sand to eroded sections to restore the beach's width. Workers dredge sand from offshore sources and pump it back onto our beach in Cancun. This method helps rebuild the shoreline while protecting local properties and maintaining safety for beach visitors.
Our beach will remain open during the restoration. We are committed to ensuring your safety and comfort as work progresses.

Cancun Beach Protection: Insurance and Sustainability
Cancun’s beaches benefit from unique insurance coverage. In 2019, Quintana Roo’s government purchased insurance to fund beach and coral reef restoration after hurricanes. This policy ensures Our Cancun Beach receives the necessary funds to recover quickly from hurricane damage. You can read more about this innovative insurance here.
Looking Ahead: Safeguarding the Future of Cancun's Beaches
Local officials, including Senator Eugenio Segura, have introduced new coastal recovery plans. These programs aim to reduce future beach erosion and ensure Cancun’s long-term beach sustainability. With strong measures in place, our shoreline in Cancun will remain a beautiful and secure destination for years to come.
We’ve faced challenges like this before, and each time, we’ve restored Our Cancun Beach to its natural beauty. While the beach undergoes nourishment, you can still enjoy Cancun’s vibrant attractions. Rest assured, our coastline will return better than ever soon.
