Cancun March 2025

On Monday, March 24, a widespread power outage in Cancun disrupted daily life across several parts of Quintana Roo. Popular destinations including Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Cancun were all affected. Guests staying at Tim’s Ocean Condos did not experience service interruption.

According to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), poor natural gas quality in the Mayakán pipeline triggered the issue. This led to a failure at the Nuevo Pemex cogeneration plant. As a result, energy production dropped significantly across the Yucatán Peninsula.

Traffic lights were down. Local businesses temporarily closed. Transit officers directed vehicles by hand. Guests staying in Tim’s Ocean Condos were not affected. The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) restored partial service by 2:30 a.m. but reported that only 47% of users had normal power levels at that time.

What Caused the Power Outage in Cancun?

The power cuts began around 3:00 p.m. and extended late into the night. Many regions reported service delays lasting up to ten hours. Four states—Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Tabasco, and Campeche—faced rolling blackouts.

Because of the sudden drop in energy supply, several power plants switched to alternative fuels. CFE, in coordination with CFEnergía and the National Energy Control Center (CENACE), launched rotating outages to lessen the impact on users.

By 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, CFE reported only 47% of users had electricity restored. The remaining users saw service return gradually.
