VRBO Sponsored Listings 2026: What Cancun Penthouse Owners Need to Know

Last Updated on August 13, 2026 by Megan

VRBO Sponsored Listings are a new advertising option that allows vacation rental owners and managers to pay for premium search placement. Unlike traditional advertising, VRBO's current program uses a pay-per-booked-night model. This means advertising costs are tied to actual booked nights. For Tim's Ocean Condos owners, Sponsored Listings could provide another way to increase visibility, fill calendar gaps, and protect nightly rates without relying entirely on discounts.

If you own a vacation rental, there is a new VRBO change worth knowing about.

VRBO has introduced Sponsored Listings, and I have been spending time learning exactly how the program works.

More importantly, I have been looking at whether it makes financial sense for our penthouses.

What Is VRBO Sponsored Listings?

Sponsored Listings allow vacation rentals to receive premium placement within VRBO search results.

In simple terms, we can now pay to help a penthouse appear more prominently when travelers are searching.

That is a pretty big change.

Historically, we have worked hard to improve our organic position on VRBO.

Reviews, competitive pricing, Premier Host status, availability, conversion, promotions, and listing quality have all been important.

Those things still matter.

However, sponsored placement adds another factor to the equation.

What Caught My Attention

VRBO's current Sponsored Listings program is based on a pay-per-booked-night model.

That is important. Because then we are not simply paying every time somebody looks at an advertisement.

Instead, the advertising expense is connected to nights booked through the sponsored placement.

For me, that makes this much more interesting.

With this program, the advertising cost is compared directly against the reservation it helped generate.

What Does It Cost?

VRBO currently allows bids beginning at $5 per booked night.

Higher bids can potentially make a listing more competitive for sponsored placement.

For example, imagine we have an empty five-night period.

If we bid $10 per booked night, the advertising cost would be $50 for that five-night reservation.

That is very different from automatically discounting the nightly rate by 10%, 15%, or 20%.

It gives us another option.

Instead of immediately lowering the price of the penthouse, money could potentially be used to increase its visibility.

Why I Think This Is Important for Our Owners

This is where Sponsored Listings become especially interesting for Tim's Ocean Condos.

Our goal should never simply be to get more bookings.

Our goal should be to generate the best possible revenue from the nights available.

There is a difference.

Suppose we have five empty nights between two existing reservations.

Traditionally, we might consider lowering the price or adding a promotion.

Now another choice is available.

We may be able to keep the nightly rate stronger while paying a relatively small advertising amount for additional visibility.

That is something I want us to test carefully.

VRBO's Early Results Are Interesting

VRBO has released results from partners participating in its Sponsored Listings pilot program.

According to Expedia Group, participating partners averaged:

  • 49% booking growth
  • 39% revenue growth
  • 30% growth in booked nights

Those numbers certainly got my attention.

However, they do not mean every property will experience those results.

Cancun is its own market. Our penthouses are also very different from the average vacation rental.

That is why our own results will matter much more to me.

This Could Be A Useful Tool During Slower Periods

I do not believe Sponsored Listings should simply be turned on at the highest bid throughout the entire year.

Instead, I see this as another tool.

For example, we may have a penthouse with several open weekdays approaching.

Another penthouse may have an awkward four-night opening between reservations.

September and October may also require a completely different strategy than Christmas or Spring Break.

Sponsored placement could potentially be used when we actually need additional exposure.

Then it could be reduced or stopped when demand is already strong.

Advertising Versus Discounting

This may be the part of the program I find most interesting.

We have traditionally used promotions to make a vacation rental more attractive on VRBO.

However, every discount reduces the reservation revenue.

Sponsored Listings create another possibility.

Instead of giving a traveler a larger discount, some of that money could potentially be spent getting the property seen.

For example, a $4,000 reservation discounted by 10% costs the owner $400 in revenue.

If stronger visibility could help generate that reservation for substantially less, that deserves our attention.

Of course, we will not know until actual results are measured.

But that is exactly why I think testing the program makes sense.

What Tim's Ocean Condos is Watching

This is going to be approached as an investment, not simply just another VRBO feature that we turn on.

I already track the VRBO advertising costs, bookings and revenue, but now new revenue is tracked.

Most importantly, the return on this new approach is going to be evaluated.

If spending $50 helps generate thousands of dollars in otherwise unlikely revenue, that is a no brainer.

If the advertising does not produce enough additional revenue, we should know that too.

VRBO Search Is Changing

There is also a bigger reason I am paying attention.

VRBO search is becoming more competitive.

Great reviews, competitive pricing, Premier Host performance, strong photographs, and good listing management remain important.

However, paid placement is now becoming part of vacation rental search.

That means our strategy needs to continue evolving with the platform.

I do not want Tim's Ocean Condos to react to these changes six months after everyone else. Airbnb is next.

I would rather understand them early, test them carefully, and determine what works for our owners.

My Takeaway for Our Penthouse Owners

Sponsored Listings encourage me.

However, I do not view them as a reason to start spending aggressively.

I view them as another tool we can use strategically.

There may be times when lowering a rate makes sense.

There may be times when a VRBO promotion makes sense.

And now, there may be times when paying for better placement makes more sense than discounting the penthouse.

Our job is to know the difference.

As Sponsored Listings are tested, I will continue sharing what we learn here in Owner Insights.

The goal remains the same: keep our penthouses competitive, protect owner revenue, and put Tim's Ocean Condos in front of travelers searching for a vacation rental Cancun.
