VISITAX Cancun Guide: Official Payment, Cost, Who Pays, and Scam Warnings

Last Updated on July 2, 2026 by Megan

Editor's Update (July 2026): This guide has been updated with the latest VISITAX requirements, current airport enforcement, official payment instructions, and firsthand travel experiences from Tim's Ocean Condos.

Tim and I travel between the United States and Cancun almost every month. We personally pay the VISITAX during our trips and regularly depart from Cancun International Airport. Every photo in this guide was taken during our own travels, allowing us to share current information based on firsthand experience.

What Is the VISITAX?

VISITAX is a mandatory tourism tax charged by the state of Quintana Roo. Most international visitors traveling to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, and nearby destinations are required to pay it before leaving Mexico.

  • Required for international travelers over age 4.
  • Cost: approximately $18.80 USD per person.
  • Collected once per visit, not per night.
  • Funds support tourism services and infrastructure.

This tax is separate from airline fees or resort charges.

Is the VISITAX Mandatory?

Yes. All foreign visitors to Quintana Roo must pay for it.

Immigration officers or airport staff will ask for proof of payment before departure. Paying in advance is the safest choice. It prevents last-minute stress and delays.

How to Pay the VISITAX Safely

The safest way is through the official VISITAX website: https://www.visitax.gob.mx.

You will need:

  • Passport number.
  • Arrival and departure dates.
  • Credit or debit card.

After payment, a QR code will be issued. Keep it on your phone and print a copy as a backup. Airport officials may ask to see it before boarding.

Steps to pay:

  1. Enter your travel dates and group details.
  2. Complete the form with passport information.
  3. Pay securely by credit card.
  4. Download or print your QR code.

💡 Pro tip: Take a screenshot of your confirmation email and store it in a photo album labeled “Travel Documents.”

Is the VISITAX a Scam?

No, the VISITAX itself is not a scam.
But many travelers have been tricked by lookalike websites that charge extra fees or steal payment details.

Be cautious of third-party services claiming to process the tax. These are not official and may not be secure.

At Tim’s Ocean Condos, we send our guests direct links to the official site. We also offer support before departure to help avoid scams.

What Happens If You Don’t Pay?

In July of 2025, Cancun Airport increased enforcement.

During a recent trip, Tim and I were stopped just after checking in for our Southwest flight at Terminal 4. They asked us to show our QR code before moving forward.

If you cannot show proof, expect delays. Your payment is required before departure, and you will pay more at a staffed counter in the terminal.

Who Has to Pay VISITAX?

You must pay VISITAX if you are:

  • An international visitor
  • Traveling to Quintana Roo
  • Visiting Cancun
  • Visiting Playa del Carmen
  • Visiting Tulum
  • Visiting Cozumel

Who does not have to Pay VISITAX?

  • Mexican citizens
  • Mexican permanent residents
  • Some diplomatic travelers
  • Travelers only connecting through Cancun without entering Quintana Roo (if applicable)
