Unruly spring break travelers who break the law can get their fines and jail their time reduced.

There is a new option for drunk and disorderly Cancun tourists who create a public nuisance.

Instead of paying a hefty fine and spending days in jail for public drunkenness – offenders can pick up sargassum of the beaches of Cancun.

This type of sanction is a viable option both for the government and the tourist because in addition to compensating for the damages caused by the tourists, the offenders clean the beaches during high season when thousands of people are expected for Easter.

People can choose to do community service and will not have to pay fines or go to jail to pay the debt to society. The option that most choose is collect the sargassum from the beach because this option cannot exceed more than 5 hours of working so as not to affect the offender’s physical integrity.

Based on their offense, the offenders are assigned an amount of community service hours they must complete before being officially released.
