Cancun Spring Break Over 6000 military police deployed to keep tourists safe

Increased Military Personnel

The government of Mexico decided to deploy over 6000 military personnel to Cancun for the Easter holiday weekend.

This year Cancun expects a massive influx of tourists. More than 12 million tourists visit Cancun every year.

The government of Mexico and Cancun is taking every precaution to keep its tourists safe.

Military police began working the beaches about a month ago. Because of that, the media increased images of Military police working the beaches as tourists sunbathed and enjoyed their vacation.

Tourist Protection Army

In the fall of 2021 Governor Carlos Joaquin announced that Quintana Roo created a new army security battalion. This battalion was provided by the Mexican Federal Government and set up an army base on the strip of land provided by the state of Quintana Roo. Over 1400 permanent full-time soldiers protect tourists visiting Cancun.

The Tourist Protection Arm was deployed December 1, 2021.

The national guard tourist arms were made up of 1445 soldiers including 126 Special Operations Soldiers from the Mexican Navy.

This Army Protection Battalion is the first ever of its kind in Cancun.

The soldiers are on duty to help protect the tourists, the business owners, and residents of Cancun.

"The first priority of the soldiers will be protecting the municipalities of Benito Juarez (Cancun), Solidardad (Playa Del Carmen) and Tulum," explained Luis Cresencio Sandoval, The Secretariat of National Defense of Mexico.

New Anti-Drug Campaign

The Mexican government recently started a program called Sé Parte de la Solución (Be Part of the Solution).

The new anti-drug campaign is created to prevent drug related crimes and issues that occur during the infamous party season called “spring break.”

Sé Parte de la Solución (Be Part of the Solution)

The Cancun government of Quintana Roo presented the awareness campaign: "Be part of the solution" that seeks to promote healthy coexistence between tourists and visitors and prevent them from possible sanctions for the possession and use of drugs in Cancun. In addition, it will have a presence in tourist areas, on screens and areas of the airport, ferries, hotels, beaches, and tourist establishments.

The official launch of the campaign was the first week of April 2022 and is available in Spanish, English, French and German.

According to the information provided, the Working Group on Communication and Security for Tourists of Quintana Roo seeks to strengthen the institutional channels that account for official actions for the benefit of the sector and the image of destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.

Mexico Government spokesperson Fernando Mora Guillen said that travelers who stay in hotels in Cancun will need to sign a new acknowledgement form at check-in. This form acknowledges they understand the Mexican laws surrounding the consumption and transportation of illicit substances. It also states they understand the risks and consequences of consuming drugs during their stay in Quintana Roo.

The Sé Parte de la Solución (Be Part of the Solution) campaign is already being promoted to tourists as they arrive inside airports, marine terminals, and all hotels to combat the increased drug use.

This campaign urges tourists in Cancun to avoid using drugs. The strategy is to show powerful images on posters and billboards to deter the use of drugs. The U.S. Ambassador Ken Salazar recommended this.

An example is a poster in the Cancun International Airport showing an American behind bars with a title above it saying, “Don’t turn your vacation into a permanent stay.”

These powerful images being displayed was an idea recommended by the United States Ambassador Ken Salazar. In consensus with the General Communication Coordination (CGC) in April they launched this new campaign against drugs.
