Flights to Cancun Not Affected by FAA Reductions in U.S. Airports

Cancun Travelers Can Relax - International Flights Continue as Scheduled
The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently ordered reductions in flight operations at 40 major airports. These changes, intended to ease pressure on air traffic controllers during the ongoing government shutdown, begin with a 4% cut in flights and will rise to 10% by November 14, 2025.
Fortunately, flights to Cancun are not affected. The FAA’s reduction applies only to domestic routes within the United States. International flights, including those to Cancun International Airport (CUN), remain fully operational.
Direct Flights to Cancun Continue from Major U.S. Cities
Cities such as Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta, Washington D.C., and New York are all on the FAA’s reduction list. However, these changes do not impact flights bound for Mexico.
American Airlines confirmed that while approximately 220 domestic flights will be canceled daily, international routes to Mexico and Canada will not be affected.
American Airlines CEO David Seymour emphasized that these operational changes exclude Cancun-bound flights entirely.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy further clarified, saying, “The order does not require a reduction in international flights. Carriers may use their own discretion to decide which flights are canceled to reach the order’s goal.”
Why Flights Are Being Reduced
The reduction was implemented to maintain safety as the government shutdown continues to strain the aviation system.
Many air traffic controllers have been working without pay, causing stress and potential risks in the airspace system.
Federal Aviation Administrator Bryan Bedford stated, “We are proactively reducing the number of flights to make sure the American people continue to fly safely.”
Despite the political tension, Duffy reassured travelers, saying, “It’s safe to fly today, and it will continue to be safe to fly next week because of the proactive actions we are taking.”
