Is the VISITAX Real? What Cancun Travelers Need to Know in 2025

Last Updated on August 5, 2025 by Megan

Yes, the VISITAX is real. It is a required tourism tax for international visitors to Cancun and the state of Quintana Roo.

Since its introduction in 2021, travelers have expressed confusion. Some worry it might be a scam, while others feel unsure about how or when to pay it.

This guide will help.

Tim and I travel to Cancun monthly from the United States. We have personally paid the VISITAX many times. In this article, we will explain exactly how it works, when to pay for it, and how to avoid problems.

If you are visiting Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum, you have probably heard about the VISITAX. This tourism tax applies to most international travelers over the age of four.

When booking a vacation rental Cancun stay with Tim’s Ocean Condos, knowing the details of VISITAX will help you avoid last-minute stress.

What Is the VISITAX?

VISITAX is a mandatory visitor fee collected by the Quintana Roo government. It applies to tourists visiting Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, and other nearby destinations.

  • Required for international travelers over age 4.
  • Cost: approximately $18.80 USD per person.
  • Collected once per visit, not per night.
  • Funds support tourism services and infrastructure.

This tax is separate from airline fees or resort charges.

Is the VISITAX Mandatory?

Yes. All foreign visitors to Quintana Roo must pay for it.

Immigration officers or airport staff will ask for proof of payment before departure. Paying in advance is the safest choice. It prevents last-minute stress and delays.

How to Pay the VISITAX Safely

The safest way is through the official VISITAX website: https://www.visitax.gob.mx.

You will need:

  • Passport number.
  • Arrival and departure dates.
  • Credit or debit card.

After payment, a QR code will be issued. Keep it on your phone and print a copy as a backup. Airport officials may ask to see it before boarding.

Steps to pay:

  1. Enter your travel dates and group details.
  2. Complete the form with passport information.
  3. Pay securely by credit card.
  4. Download or print your QR code.

💡 Pro tip: Take a screenshot of your confirmation email and store it in a photo album labeled “Travel Documents.”

Is the VISITAX a Scam?

No, the VISITAX itself is not a scam.
But many travelers have been tricked by lookalike websites that charge extra fees or steal payment details.

Be cautious of third-party services claiming to process the tax. These are not official and may not be secure.

At Tim’s Ocean Condos, we send our guests direct links to the official site. We also offer support before departure to help avoid scams.

What Happens If You Don’t Pay?

In July of 2025, Cancun Airport increased enforcement.

During a recent trip, Tim and I were stopped just after checking in for our Southwest flight at Terminal 4. They asked us to show our QR code before moving forward.

If you cannot show proof, expect delays. Your payment is required before departure, and you will pay more at a staffed counter in the terminal.
