Day Trip to Holbox: Enjoy a Day Trip to Holbox Island

Planning a day trip to Holbox is a perfect way to escape the busy streets of Cancun. During my last visit, I managed to carve out some time for a day trip to Holbox Island. This hidden gem, located three hours north of Cancun along the Yucatan Peninsula, is a must-visit destination. Holbox is car-free, road-free, and boasts miles of undeveloped beaches. It offers an authentic and serene experience that makes it ideal for a day trip to Holbox.

Driving to Chiquila for Your Day Trip to Holbox

The first step in your day trip to Holbox is driving to the ferry terminal in Chiquila. Typically, the drive from Cancun to Chiquila takes around two and a half hours. Fortunately, our manager Abdiel knew a shortcut that cut our travel time by 30 minutes. To begin your journey from Tim's Ocean Condos, head towards the airport via Punta Nizuc for about 10 kilometers. Exit south onto Highway 307 Tulum-Cancun/Mexico and continue towards QROO 180.

Pit Stop on the Way to Chiquila

On our way to Chiquila, we made a delightful stop at a roadside cabana. A local vendor was selling fresh coconut drinks and a unique fruit called Yaca, or “Jackfruit” in English. The fruit was enormous, weighing up to 80 pounds, and its appearance was quite intriguing. This quick break added an unexpected but enjoyable twist to our day trip to Holbox.

Navigating the Route to Chiquila

After enjoying the Yaca, turn right onto Federal 180 towards Valladolid for about 16 minutes. Then, turn right and quickly left to stay on QROO 180. You’ll spot a small taco stand named Mr. Carnitas along the way.

Continue on Cancun - Valladolid/Carr Mexico 180 until the road ends. Turn left to remain on QROO 180. If you need a break, there's an OXXO Gas station and a Pemex at this intersection.

Follow QROO 180 for around 40 kilometers. After reaching Valladolid Nuevo, take a shortcut just after the speed bump at 262 km and pay a small "toll" fee to proceed. This shortcut leads you to QROO 5. Turn right and follow the signs to Holbox/Chiquila to continue your day trip to Holbox.

Parking and Taking the Ferry to Holbox

As you approach the ferry terminal in Chiquila, you’ll find various parking options around the roundabout. We found a safe spot behind a yellow building for about 100 pesos for the day. We didn’t leave any belongings in the car and had no issues upon our return, making it a hassle-free start to our day trip to Holbox.

Day Trip to Holbox: Use the Ferry vs. Charter a Private Boat

When planning your day trip to Holbox, you have two options for getting to the island: taking the ferry or chartering a private boat. Both options are available at the Chiquila jetty. On the right, you'll find ferry boats, while on the left are private boats that can accommodate around ten passengers.

Taking the Ferry to Holbox

The ferry is a modern catamaran equipped with air conditioning, clean restrooms, and video screens for entertainment. Ferries depart from Chiquila to Holbox every half hour. The first ferry leaves Chiquila at 6 a.m., and the last departure is at 9 p.m. The return journey from Holbox to Chiquila begins at 5 a.m., with the last ferry leaving at 8 p.m. The ferry is a convenient option for those looking for a comfortable, hassle-free ride during their day trip to Holbox. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenic views on your way to the island.

Chartering a Private Boat for a Day Trip to Holbox

If you're looking for a more flexible and personalized experience for your day trip to Holbox, consider chartering a private boat. This option allows you to set your own schedule and enjoy a quicker ride to Holbox. It’s ideal if you want to start your day early or make the most of your time on the island.

I opted for a private boat on my last day trip to Holbox, and it turned out to be a fantastic choice. Our captain, Antonio, provided a smooth and enjoyable ride that took less than fifteen minutes. Once we arrived at the Holbox dock, yellow golf carts were available to transport us to our destination. However, Abdiel suggested walking since our beach spot was less than a mile away. This allowed me to capture some beautiful photos of the island’s colorful street art and charming buildings.
